The AeroRig®
The AeroRig®is a trademark name for a type of freestanding rotating right. It does not rely on stays or rigging in a conventional sense. There are no shrouds, stays, or spreaders.
Due to the the unstayed nature the mast they are built stronger than their conventional count parts and to reduce the weight, Sareks's mast is made from carbon fiber. The carbon fiber mast exists alongside an integral long boom extending force aft of the mast, on which both the main and jib are set.
Further a major reduction in load on the yacht comes about because there is no compression down the mast which is induced by the rigging tensions on a normal rig. The free-standing spar neither tries to bend the yacht around it nor suffers from the buckling instability that often leads to the failure of conventional stayed spars.
Another feature of the AeroRig® is the creation of a jib slot that does not require constant adjustment and which works efficiently on all points of sailing. The whole rig is controlled by a single lightly loaded line and thus can be trimmed more readily and more effectively by shorthanded crews than a normal rig.
This improved aerodynamic efficiency and trimming gives performance benefits, in addition to the simpler and safer handling. Ultra quick de-powering gives all crew members a sense of easy control in case of emergency.
Tacking, gybing, reefing and hoisting sails are effortless and with the natural movement of the rig to balance into the wind you do not have to deviate from course to raise or lower the sails.
Safety at sea is further improved with all round visibility at all times, no standing rigging for the sails to chafe against and no rigging to fatigue or fail. The rig is kinder to the yacht, and the complete absence of flogging sails and highly loaded sheets, makes yachting more relaxing and pleasant and permits genuine safe, efficient, and solid sailing performance.
The rig is well proven on yachts from 7 to 23 meters (20 to 70 ft) LOA on ocean passages and inshore sailing. Super sailing yachts have also adopted the principle.
